Chesterfield decorator takes lead role for PDA

Stuart Yates, from Brimington, stepped up for his one-year  term of office with the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) at the AGM and national conference held in  Leicestershire last week.

The PDA, celebrating its 122nd anniversary this year, is  Britain’s largest trade organisation dedicated to the painting  and decorating industry.

Mr Yates, who owns the local business Stuart Yates Décor,  said: “I’m extremely proud to be elected president and am  looking forward to representing the association – it’s going to  be an experience.

“I’ve been a member for many years and very much intend to  make the most of the position. I started my apprenticeship back in 1976 with Mather and  Harrison in Derbyshire when Wilf Harrison became national  president. He was the one who encouraged me to become a member of  the PDA and I’ve wanted this position ever since, so it’s great  to be able to finally get there 40 years on.”

During his term in office, Mr Yates is particularly keen to  encourage up and coming tradespeople.

He added: “The Painting and Decorating Association is very  keen to see more young painters and decorators join the ranks  and that’s a subject that’s close to my heart. Apprentices represent the future of the body and we should do everything we can to encourage them. We must ensure the PDA continues to move forward as a strong and robust organisation long after the present generation has moved on. Our strategy going forward needs to include provision for more young decorators, and indeed female decorators, and I’ll use my time as president to push that forward.”

Stuart takes over the chains of office from retiring National President, Mr Derek Longcake.

Johnstone’s Painter of the Year – 2013 Finalist

In June we were thrilled to be awarded a Very Highly Commended certificate for successfully beating 130 entrants to become a category finalist in the Small Business Category.

Johnstone’s Painter of the Year – 2010 Winner

Recognition at the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Competition represents the ultimate accolade in the profession for any decorating company, with the event celebrating its 28th anniversary. The competition culminated in an awards ceremony at the luxurious De Vere Carden Park Hotel, near Chester. The work of 19 finalists was showcased during the evenings presentation. Each finalist was carefully selected following visits from technical representatives of the national judging panel to every one of our customers who entered a project. The criteria for entry was that either Johnstone’s or Leyland paints had been used on the project, that it had been completed in 2010 and that it was a job they were proud of.

Each job was reviewed to assess:

  • The quality of the decorative finish
  • The intricacy of the work involved
  • The technical and logistical challenges presented by the project

Following the assessment of all the entries, the judging panel had the difficult task of whittling down the entries to a finalist list. For the second year running the fate of the finalists was in the hands of the guests at the Painter of the Year Awards. Each guest was given a key pad to interactively vote for their favourite.

The event started with the PPG Golf Masters on Nicklaus Course at Carden Park Hotel. The players battled it out for first prize of a golfing trip to Spain this September, to join the winners of the national PPG golf tournament currently taking place. Golf attire was swapped for black tie in readiness for the evening’s festivities and announcement of the category winners and Supreme Winner was eagerly anticipated. The evening was hosted by Steve Pocock and Vincent O’Sullivan.
